The Backpack Poject

The backpack project was started after one child had heard of Mary's Meals at her local church. She explained to her teacher who in turn invited the child to speak to the whole school and spread the word about Mary's Meals charity, The childs name was Charlotte. The school pupils then sterted a project to collect backpacks for the poorer childrn. It does this by inviting people to fill up an old school bag/pack with some everyday school things. These bags will then be given out to childrn who realy need them.
The backpack project sent over 33,000 backpacks last year to some of the poorest children in the world: they have been sent to Malawi, Uganda,Liberia and Romania. For information on the backpack programe download the FAQ DOCUMENT.

In 2002 Magnus was operating a simple famine relief in Malawi when he met a family that led to a whole new area of work.
A mother was lying on the floor of her hut with all of her 6 young children gathered around her. She was dying of AIDS. She knew that the AIDS epidemic had taken so many lives and had left 1 million orphans in Malawi alone. Her main concern was for her children and who would look after them after she died, she say's all she could do was pray for some kind of help. Magnus asked her oldest son what he most hoped for in life, he replyed "To have enough to eat and go to school one day," Magnus never fogot those words. It prompted the campaign, Marys Meals.
This aims to provide chronically hungry children with one meal a day in school. Today they provide meals for around 375000 children in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. In this way the children are encouraged to gain the education that can lift them out of poverty in later life.

Scottish International Relief

S.I.R came into being during the Bosnian conflict in 1992. Magnus and Fergus MacFarlane-Barrow ( brothers ), were so upset by some of the T V footage they started an appeal for blankets. They soon managed to collect enough blankets through donations from the public to load up a jeep and joined one of the convoys leaving the U K and delivered aid to Medjugorje in Bosnia a place where pilgrims were gathering over the years. They themselvs and their families had previously visited a few years before. They returned to Scotland believing their good deed done to go back to thier jobs as fish farmers. However when they returned they discovered the public had carried on donating aid in their absence filling thier parents' garage with goods.

Magnus gave up his job for a year to keep taking aid out for as long as the public kept donating. The public did not stop and it soon became necessary to set up a registered charity. They began to work in Romania, building homes for abandoned children, and in Liberia, helping refugees to return home by setting up mobile clinics, while still delivering material aid to Croatia and Bosnia.

Saint Marys Charity

In case you havent heard of St Marys Meals charity, let me try to explain they use the logo ( S.I.R ) meaning Scottish International Relief. There are only 8 charity shops in the U K. One of the shops is located in Duke St in Dennistuon Glasgow. I was a volanteer in that particular shop before I enroled at John Wheatley College. The charity feeds starving children in schools all over the world ( Third world countries ) etc.
